From Sanskrit origins
Mantra is the sound that affects the consciousness. It is a Sanskrit word formed by the root MAN : "to think" and TRA "wave or projection".
Mantra means the creative projection of the mind through sound.
The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power and a predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche.

Mantras in Kundalini Yoga
The mantras used in Kundalini Yoga elevate consciousness through their meaning and rhythmical repetition.
The bij mantra (seed mantra) in Kundalini Yoga is Satnaam, which means ‘true Identity’;
it is a mantra for becoming consciously conscious.
Using a mantra while meditating also allows the meditative mind to stay focused on this sound wave instead of the physical obstacles (e.g., discomfort of the position, or intrusive thoughts).
Choosing to chant a mantra is like choosing a mind set. May it be positive, joyful, merger.
We create our reality through every word we speak.
Mantras are made of syllables which each contain a particular vibration. When you chant, your tongue contacts the palate, and stimulates the 84 meridian points there. This stimulation of the meridian points, along with the regulation of breath while chanting, has an impact on the brain through the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. The result is that you can feel more calm, balanced, and with greater mental clarity.

Vibrating a Mantra
Remember, chanting is not singing or speaking, it is vibrating. You want to "feel" the mantra vibrating.
Chant from your navel point for maximum power.
If you're chanting with other people, listen to the leader and/or the group vibration and match it, stay with it.
When chanting aloud, be consciously aware of the activity of your tongue on the meridian points in the roof of your mouth. Some mantras, such as Har, or Haree, are supposed to be chanted only with the tip of the tongue, without moving the lips at all, while other mantras, such as Wahe Guru, at certain times call for exaggerating the movement of the lips. Read all the instructions and follow them. Do the best you can, and let God do the rest!
